Motorola Patent a Self-Healing Display Technology That Can Be a Solution To Cracked Screen Repairs

One of  the most annoying and common thing that some smartphone users always have to deal with is is a shattered screen or screen scratches. And sometimes, the money you spend on repairs can be enough to buy a new smartphone.

Screen scratches are sometimes inevitable; This is because most of the low-end to mid-ranged smartphones do not come with screen protectors. Even the high-end phones with screen protectors are liable to scratches when we don't take proper precautions.

But Motorola has come up with a technology that can put an end to some of this expensive repairs and screen scratches. On Wednesday, Motorola was granted a patent for a phone display that heals if it is cracked. The display is based on a material that when heated, is able to “reverse some or all of the deformation” that has occurred.

The display is made out of "shape memory polymer" which can heal itself when subjected to rapid changes in heat. The phone itself could produce the heat (Motorola even envisions an app that tells the phone where to start repairs), but your body heat, a dock or a plug-in panel might also work. Though, there is no guarantee that damage on the polymer screen will be totally fixed, but the thermal process will repair as much as it can.

However, as this is just a patent application, there is no guarantee that such displays will be manufactured in large quantities anytime soon. Also, polymer screen may feel a bit weird as users are already used to glass screens on smartphones. Another thing is the issue of price, if the company later goes into production.

But, In the mean time, this technology -when finally available- can proof to be a solution to users that can't just do without dropping their phones once in a while.
